Drawing Hope
When our body and mind struggle with sickness, they also experience love. At ACT Genomics, we believe all-round cancer management can help more patients and their families. Our team will continue their hard work because hope is in our DNA. Last year, Hope Foundation for Cancer Care together with ACT Genomics, Lily Taiwan and Pfizer co-organized the ninth Drawing Hope Competition. We have selected here 15 award-winning paintings from the Patient Category plus the Family and Friends Category, all with a unique and inspiring story. A picture paints a thousand words. The complex feelings captured in the different images and colors come from real cancer-fighting stories. Feel them. Take courage from them.

These artificial arteries are like my second heart. The medicine injected through countless pipelines nourishes me. My thoughts grow strong like a vine, breaking through the window of the ward, exuding the light of life. Looking forward to the day when they grow into ripe and sweet green apples. Fly. Fly. Fly towards hope and light.

For lymphoma patients, the most terrifying aspect is not surgery, but the never-ending chemotherapy. For days, when the sun refused to shine, I would hide away in a cave like a weak Barbary sheep, waiting to be saved by my angels. They kissed my wounds and healed my heart. They danced and granted me hope, until I regained my freedom again.

Why am I the one chosen by The Demon of Cancer? How hard and tortured it was during the treatment… Fortunately, my dear family members have been with me all the time. I am the eagle that I painted. I am not afraid of what’s ahead. I will live a meaningful life.

When I was diagnosed with cancer, I realized that life would not go smoothly all the time. But, if the journey had been smooth, there won’t have been this painting. Fighting against illness is like climbing a mountain. Only with persistence can I achieve my goal. While pursuing my goal, I found a light at the end of tunnel. For me, this is not the end, but the beginning of life.

Bad things happen to good guys, like they will have cancer too. Let go of self-blame. Walk into nature for enlightenment. When you hear the death of life, you also witness the sprouts of life. Only then do you realize that there is compassion behind the pain, and that there is still hope in the dark.

Twelve years ago, my father had surgery for kidney cancer, leaving a long scar on his belly. I was two-years-old back then and didn’t understand anything. I am now 14- years-old, and my father was diagnosed with a tumor again. This time, I will accompany my father and cheer him on. I wish my father, and all cancer patients, good health.

Withered lotus leaves float on the water, going on the last mile of their journey, accompanied by fallen petals and duckweed. We nourish each other in the prime of life. We are guardians of our younger generation till the last breath. Life is not about how long it is. A moment short as it is, can be an eternity.

My mom is full of hope even when she is sick, as if nothing can defeat her optimism. She started losing her hair during chemotherapy. I helped shave her hair into a skinhead style. Cancer is like a giant beast eating in the body and mind. Aromatherapists provide hospice care to patients with gentle massages and tender words. As a family member, I was so moved. I would like to express my thanks to all medical staff for your love and kindness till the very end.

A piece of bauhinia leaf, though rotten, still shows a beautiful pattern of veins. Sunlight glistens with rays of life, like blood flowing through veins. Be brave and strong. Don’t be afraid. Keep your chin up. Let’s fight together and embrace hope.

My dad’s Chinese name is Pine and Cypress, which means toughness and perseverance. He loves my mom. He was courageous during his treatments, staying strong for her. When my dad finished his last treatment in September, he was too weak to speak. But he still tried his best to write down: “I love you”, for the one who has been holding his hands for a lifetime.

You have been by my side since I was a child. Every day I came home from school, you would ask me if I was hungry and whether I was happy at school. You also taught me to be a good person, to be filial, and to be considerate of others. Now it’s my turn to take care of you and accompany you. To be brave with the treatments to come. Let’s go for a trip to Japan together when you recover.
